The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau

The Testing
Getting into college is hard but the uncertainty millennials face has nothing on this futuristic ACT. After the last world war wreaked havoc on the planet in several stages, including four when the Earth fought back with tornadoes, earthquakes, and rising tides that devoured cities whole, humans band together to rebuild. But when food is scarce and resources limited the stakes are higher than ever, which is why Cia wants to follow in her father's footsteps and go to university. The odds don't look good though because no one from Cia's colony has gotten in in the past ten years not even her brother Zeen, and he's smarter than anyone that Cia'd ever known.
On top of that, Cia isn't feeling the encouragement from her parents, but she cant imagine why they wouldn't want her to succeed, and going to University is the highest honor. When no speaker from Tosu City, the mecca of political and educational development, shows up for her graduation Cia thinks all is lost.

I think this is a great text to use in junior or senior year to discuss self assessment because the main characters are constantly having to reassess their situations, abilities, and friendships.
